Title:  Crossing the Road

Stepping Out
Title:  Stepping Out
Description:  The Holcomb Creek Trestle is nearly 1200 feet long and almost 100 feet tall at its highest point. It is the longest and tallest active timber rail trestle in North America today and sees two trains each day, both of them the Harbor Turn.

How's the View?
Title:  How's the View?
Description:  SD40-2 twins 3052 and 3053 make their way over the towering Holcomb Creek Trestle with the Harbor Turn behind them. Normally this train goes back empty so the loaded log cars (what it took down) is very strange indeed.

Almost There
Title:  Almost There
Description:  Track speed on the trestle is 10 mph so it takes some time to get across. This line saw no trains between 1994 and 1998 and came within inches of being turned into a rail trail. Thank God that didn't happen.

An Alternate Present
Title:  An Alternate Present
Description:  In a world where BN never sold the United District to the Willamette & Pacific, this might have been an everyday occurrence. But this was the first time (to knowledge) that locomotives of this size ever crossed the Holcomb Creek Trestle. ES44C4 6746 and ES44AC 5899 had the honors.

Title:  Don't Look Down!
Description:  The conductor seems to have been overcome by a sudden bout of vertigo and is checking out the lengthy drop to the ground. Luckily for him and everyone involved, the trestle held up beautifully.

Guests of Honor
Title:  Guests of Honor
Description:  BNSF contacted the Portland & Western to store some baretable (intermodal) cars for them. In response, the P&W cleared several miles of the former Port of Tillamook Bay RR for the storage of said cars and BNSF supplied the power for them. The P&W supplied the crews so while these are BNSF locomotives, it's a P&W crew.

Strange Fellows
Title:  Strange Fellows
Description:  Far from their natural habitat of running Z trains across the plains, these two modern BNSF locomotives also bring intermodal cars to a line where log cars and timber products usually rule.

Adams Avenue Street Running
Title:  Adams Avenue Street Running
Description:  P&W Train #663 normally routes through Lake Oswegon and onto UP's Brooklyn Sub at Milwaukie but lately the delays have been forcing the P&W to route the train over Cornelius Pass. Here is one such detoured train running down Adams Ave. in downtown Hillsboro.

Heading into the Countryside
Title:  Heading into the Countryside
Description:  MOW recently did some work on the track between Banks and Hillsboro, removing the 10 mph slow orders and restoring 25 mph service. The 10 mph sign in this shot warns eastbound trains of the approaching yard limits.

Up and Over
Title:  Up and Over
Description:  This connection was built in 2016 and opened less than a year ago. It allows trains to transfer between the Tillamook and United Districts without having to run around the train in Banks, as had been the case. It was the first heavy rail construction in the Portland area since the early 80s and this photo illustrates the significant grade involved.
